264-Valkyrie’s View: A Year Among the Stars
September 20th, 2552 – Now we’re cooking
Structural Engineer/Subversive Rescue Operations Director Kat “S-Kat” James Reporting
I got a long debrief from the brass and a warning from Fipps. The brass wanted to make sure they’d covered everything and that they made it clear that they were not responsible for what I did on my own.
They were basically giving me carte blanche to work on the ship and see what makes it tick, as long as they are kept out of it, and the Ani didn’t catch wind of what I was doing.
Fipps, who’d been reviewing the diagrams and 3D rendering was able to determine that the ship was designed with multiple tracking and safety devices. In addition to a tendency to want to home in on the nearest Ani outpost, it also transmitted its location and status.
So— no powering anything up until we know what it does— which is fine since I left the power source in a different location than the rest of the ship.
I spent the evening tucked away doing a little research and nearly had a heart attack when I found a section in the engine that was emitting heat.
It turns out that humans aren’t the only ones who cook with their engines – It seems I found the Ani equivalent of a fermentation device. I’m not sure what they were cooking— but I’m pretty sure I don’t want to meet that in a dark alley either.
