Yet A(nother) Year in Seattle – Week 28 – Normal is Highly Overrated

Yet A(nother) Year In Seattle

Sunday, July 4, 2066 – Playing for Pyros.

They say you should leave the fireworks to the trained professionals. Unfortunately somewhere along the lines, the professionals forgot to respect their pyrotechnics. You work with anything long enough you forget things, like the fact that fireworks are controlled explosives, keyword here being ‘controlled’  WIthout control, they’re just explosions.

The team running the display over the Sound got a very painful reminder of why you have to respect the pyro… One of the ambulance crews got a painful reminder of the fact that 02 burns… sometimes even explodes.

The only good thing I can say about the whole thing is… we survived and that which does not kills us… well… it may be back for seconds… but not tonight.

Monday, July 5, 2066 – One step closer

Today I got some very good news. Mitch has testified to the grand jury and the parties implicated have been arrested.

I know it doesn’t mean his part in all of this is over, but hopefully, they have figured out that I am not the way to get to him. Marshals have been assigned to watch over Jenny and the others but we’re pretty sure they knew he’d avoided them and gone directly to me so, hopefully, that will help keep them safe.

Maybe Mitchell was right, I’m not your average law-abiding citizen. I’m your average motor-medic turned chief with some very protective friends in my corner.

All in all a good day and one step closer to getting to sleep in my own bed.

Tuesday, July 6, 2066 – Starting for home.

Another day closer to going home, another day of not being attacked and as far as we can tell, there were no kidnapping attempts.

I actually got to do my job. I hardly know what to do.

True it was too hot for anyone to really want to do anything more than roll over and go back to sleep, but it’s a start.

Wednesday, July 7, 2066 – Adult time.

Today I worked in the office again. No big surprise there since it costs the company too much for me to go on a call right now, I mean the ERT is supposed to be for EMERGENCIES not on duty in full call out gear at all times watching over their chief.

It wasn’t that bad actually. I had enough paperwork and reports to review, tabulate and file that before I knew it the shift was over. I was actually tired enough that dozed off while Jonathan drove me home

When he parked the car, I was surprised. I never even noticed him going through the checkpoint to Council Island. As I started gathering my things, I realized why: we didn’t go to council Island. We were in the condo’s parking garage.

I was sitting there smiling like an idiot unable to say anything, which only seemed to amuse Jonathan even more.

And there was more. Case was waiting for me, a candle-lit dinner and no sign of Bri. This bothered me until he told me that Bri figured we needed some ‘adult time’ and that there would be plenty of time for her to be the center of our attention later.

I think she was thinking of her little brother, but you never know. It would have been a perfect evening but as we were getting ready for bed, someone opened the front door and entered in the security code.

Case and I were already reaching for our weapons when Ethan called out, “Dad? Jess?”

Guess Bri will just have to settle for her big brother.

Thursday, July 8, 2066 – Oops

Needless to say Ethan was a bit embarrassed, but all Case and I could to was laugh. It was shades of when we first started dating and Case had made me a special dinner and well… plans fell through.

Ethan on the other hand only felt worse when he found out what had been happening in our lives.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked us in the morning.

Case and I exchanged looks and gave him a sheepish smile. “We… forgot?”

“You forgot?”

Yeah, we can deal with almost any emergency situation but talk to family and we fail… early and often.

You’d think he’d expect it by now.

“Just tell me you didn’t forget Bri…” He added noticing the complete absence of the terror.

“She’s with Trina and Jonathan… well, actually by now she’s at school…”

It took some talking but we did get Ethan to stay with us until he figures out if he’s going back to school early or not. It all depends on what kind of summer job, if any, he can get.

Friday, July 9, 2066 –

I’ve started this so many times… I just can’t. Tomorrow, maybe tomorrow will be better… maybe then I can… I just can’t right now.

Saturday, July 10, 2066 – Loss

I know I wanted to know more of what was going on, but not like this. I was ready for whatever it was to involve me… maybe even the boys. But even when I first came to Seattle and was checking for John Does in the hospitals and the morgues… I was never prepared for anything like this.

Andy…

He’s gone and what they did to him. I’ve seen more than enough blood magic compliments of ATZ not to recognize it for what it was and what it was, was EVIL.

It was detailed, deliberate and … The drawings were intricate and the references were available online indicated that it was reserved either for the most devote of practitioners or the greatest of enemies.

I want to hurt someone so badly right now, but instead, I’m making funeral arrangements and trying to make sure my brother is truly free of these monsters.

I’m just not ready to say good-bye.
