Unfortunately, there were a lot more losses than recoveries. All told we were able to save 7 Ani children and 2 adults. Call it a moral imperative, call it sentimentality – we couldn’t just leave the bodies of the fallen where they lay.

Druckab refused to give us any more to go on other than – leave, and “I’m not getting involved.”
I hate to break it to him, but he’s with us, and if we’re under an execution order, so’s he.

We got some answers from the people we recovered, but for the most part, the adults felt they should go with their fallen brothers.

There was a lot of pomp and circumstance and the diplomats were trying to do what they do- which wasn’t being very effective.

Part of me wishes I could keep my mouth shut but— I’ve already been labeled a subversive influence, I figure I might as well use it.

I pointed out that at least with us, the drive is to survive, to see the young grow and become the next generation. I think I said something to the effect of “If you want to throw away your lives, fine— but the children should have a choice – and they need someone to watch out for them.”

It was agreed that we would take them to a habitable planet where they could form a small commune. In the grand scheme of things, it’s probably nothing, but for me— it felt like we’d pulled off a win.

At least for now.
